I really want a career in the West End doing musical theatre so I started having singing lessons about a year and a half ago and am now working towards my grade five exam.
My teacher is really good and I’m enjoying singing but the only problem is that my voice is now really classical sounding and nearly all the songs I sing with my singing teacher are classical, which is still fun but it requires different techniques to musical theatre singing, which is what I really love.
Do you think I should quit my singing lessons?
Thanks xx
I am a singer who performs in professional touring productions and I was trained Classically. Just because you’re trained classically doesn’t mean you have to sing that way. It’s much easier to adapt a classical training to a pop play than the other way around.
You’ve got a good classical foundation, so you’re on the right track. Did you know that there are voice teachers that specialize on pop, jazz and music theater technique? If your current teacher does not know how to teach “pop” singing, then it may be time to move on to someone new.
Don’t underestimate the importance of classical technique though. Now you can build on that knowledge. Good luck!
